Six Ways to Combat Online Fraud

Six Ways to Combat Online FraudCredit card fraud. It's one of the biggest problems that eBusinesses face. The most effective means of deterring online credit card fraud are:

  • Real-time credit card authorization: authorizing credit card payments in real-time, before approving the sale, assures you of a valid credit card number that has not been reported stolen.
  • Address Verification System (AVS): this verifies that the billing address matches the address on file for that card. Although AVS provides some level of protection, our experience tells us that you will see a number of "false-positive" readings. You need to employ other fraud tools.
  • Card Verification Codes (CVV2): you'll find the CVV2 number on the back of the credit card (the last three digits, after the account number). CVV2 is not on the magnetic stripe and is not to be stored online. By requiring customers to provide the CVV2 number, you have fairly high assurance that the buyer is holding the physical card.
  • Out-of-band verification: "out-of-band" means that you verify the authenticity of the buyer outside of the Internet. For example, it is now possible to place a real-time, automated phone call to the buyer while they're shopping on your site, asking them to enter the confirmation code appearing on their screen. This gives you great assurance that the buyer is authentic.
  • Rule-based fraud detection: a simple set of 30-40 "if-then" rules can catch the majority of online fraud. For example, you may wish to deny all orders coming from Eastern European countries that list a free email account (a common profile for fraudulent orders).
  • Neural network systems: neural-network systems calculate scores for an order to determine how likely it is to be fraudulent. Neural networks are very good at catching certain types of fraud, but are expensive and complicated to maintain.
